Many of you follow his posts on Facebook groups specializing in ponds and koi: Michel Dardenne has become a true authority in the field. Thanks to his infectious passion and practical experience, he regularly shares his advice to help enthusiasts successfully create their ponds.
In this category, you will find the products he personally recommends, as well as a summary of his 10 key recommendations for getting through the season with a healthy pool.
🎯 Here are 10 key principles to apply to maximize your chances of success in managing your koi pond:
-
A pond is not simply a fish tank. It requires regular and precise monitoring. Otherwise, disappointments quickly follow…
-
Prevention is better than cure. Rigorous and appropriate maintenance helps avoid illnesses and repeated treatments.
-
Maintain the correct fish-to-water-volume ratio. Koi should never be kept in less than 4m³, nor should a sturgeon be kept in less than 10m³.
-
Ensure complete and appropriate filtration. This must include a mechanical section (for waste) and a biological section (for the treatment of nitrites and ammonia). All with effective oxygenation.
-
Renew the water regularly. During the season, change between 5 and 20% of the pool's volume each week, using tap water or well water that has been thoroughly tested (avoid rainwater).
-
Stabilize water parameters, especially KH. A KH between 4 and 8 prevents pH fluctuations and supports biological filtration. To adjust: perform a water change or add KH+ if needed.
-
In spring and autumn: boost your pond. Adding products like Malamix 17 helps enrich the water and strengthen the vitality of your fish.
-
In summer: support for filters and fish. A dose of Anarex Bio or equivalent revitalizes beneficial bacteria and helps fish heal minor injuries.
-
Weekly addition of clay and probiotics. 10g/m³ of clay after the water change + 2.5g/m³ of Baobio in the filter: a winning combination for water clarity and overall health.
-
Limit bacterial pressure and algae growth. By following the precise dosage instructions, products like Supertab , Virkon , Green Control , or Pond Repair can be very helpful. If you don't have filamentous algae, this point can be disregarded.
💡 Finally, in spring and autumn , plan a course of vitamins (C, D, propolis, echinacea, garlic, clay...) to strengthen your fish's immunity. Mix it directly into their food.
